KOCHI: Homestays are an integral part of the tourism sector. The growth of tourism industry is largely dependent on them. But according to industry sources, the homestay concept launched with much fanfare is not getting the much needed support from the government.Of the 50 homestays started at the Model Tourism Village in Kumbalangi, many have closed down due to lack of patronage, the sources said. The promoters had taken a plunge expecting huge prospects. According to Terrence of Riverside Homestays, Palluruthy, the government can do a lot to promote homestays. The names of homestays can be displayed on the tourism department websites. This will increase the credibility of homestays, he said. He also said that there were some issues which really needed the government?s attention. The homestay promoters are forced to pay high electricity tariffs. ?It is not an issue during the tourism season. But during the off season it becomes a burden,? he said. He said that they had lost prospective customers due to bulk cancellations recently.Patrick who runs a homestay in Fort Kochi said the government has done a good job by giving a thrust to the homestay concept. But it should do more.He said that a large number of homestays are operating illegally. This has certainly affected those operating with a licence. The concept of homestays is to offer accommodation and food at budget rate. A place qualifies for a homestay only if it is part of a residence.
