The clip shows one crash test dummy being protected by an Amsafe airbag ? the only kind certified for commercial use ? and another getting its head knocked into its torso.
Amsafe Airbags have been installed on many planes of late and are intended to keep passengers from getting knocked out in case of a survivable accident. Budget Travel reports that the FAA has been requiring that the bags be installed in bulkhead rows of flights within the United States and in seats facing walls since 2009.
According to a spokesman for Amsafe, the airbags are "designed to keep passengers conscious during the critical 90 seconds immediately following a survivable incident."
Since 1980, three people have been killed by turbulence according to the FAA. Flight attendants, who are more likely to be sitting in bulkhead seats, are the ones most commonly injured when rides get bumpy.
