10 Tips for a Better Tax Season Next Year

Have a better tax seasonTax Day is one of those days you probably find yourself thinking about for weeks on end. It's kind of like a reverse Christmas: You know it's coming because those of us in the media have been hyping it in the press for months. You mark it on your calendar and you take steps to get ready. And when the day finally arrives, it's a really big deal. But then, as fast as it comes, it's gone -- so you put everything away and forget about it until the next year rolls around.

Only that's not exactly what you should be doing. In fact, the weeks right after tax season are a great time to reflect upon what went right - and what didn't - with respect to your taxes and financial matters.

To help you learn from your mistakes -- or keep up your healthy habits -- following are the 10 best tips to learn from this past tax season and get ready for next one:

  1. Get organized. You'll need your 2009 tax returns for the 2010 tax season so don't just toss them in a box and forget about them. File them where you'll be able to find them quickly. Better yet, scan and save your return to a CD or to your hard drive (and be sure to back it up).
  2. Don't forget your follow through. If you filed a tax extension -- or you have additional forms to file such as the Report of Foreign Bank and Financial Accounts (FBAR) due in June -- don't forget you still have work to do. Make sure you meet any remaining deadlines.
  3. Make estimated payments. If you owed money with your 2009 tax return, consider making estimated payments in 2010 to avoid the same result next year. You can use the IRS form 1040-ES (this downloads as a pdf) to figure and make your payments.
  4. Adjust your withholding. Getting a refund is always fun. But if your refund is very large and it wasn't due to a one-time, unexpected tax benefit, such as the refundable adoption credit, you should consider changing your withholding status so you keep more of your own money during the tax year. If you need help, use the IRS online withholding calculator to figure out what's best for you.
  5. Invest in some software. Organizing your financial information come tax time generally takes much longer than actually preparing the return. Keep things simple by using a personal finance software package. If you enter your transactions as you go (or download them from your bank), you'll be ready come tax time. Take note: Some banks even offer software as part of their online banking service.
  6. Interview a tax professional. It can be difficult to find a good tax professional during tax season when both of you are facing a time crunch. With most of the rush over, now's a good time to call or meet with a few candidates to see who might be the best fit to work with next year.
  7. Meet with your financial advisor. This is also a good time to arrange a good sit-down with your financial advisor and figure out what you might do differently next year. Did you fail to take advantage of potential capital losses? Could you have benefited from contributing to a retirement account? Would it make sense to invest in some tax-exempt bonds? These are the kinds of questions to ask now so that you can plan ahead for next year.
  8. Think about the impact of major life decisions on your taxes. Are you expecting? Divorcing? Buying a new house? Retiring? Major life decisions could potentially impact your federal income tax picture. If you're planning to make a big change, ask your tax professional for advice.
  9. Resolve to keep better records. In order to stay organized, consider a new record-keeping strategy. You might want to try a different household filing system or buy a hand-held scanner to keep receipts and other records at your fingertips.
  10. Don't get discouraged. So maybe tax season wasn't a breeze this year. Maybe you owed more than you planned or you struggled to find your records. Keep in mind that was last year. Tell yourself that you'll do better this year - and then do it.

New Wedding Site Targets Indian Bridal Market in U.S.

Exclusively. In wedding and bridal pieces for indian weddingsBrides and grooms of South Asian descent living in the U.S. no longer have to take a passage to India to find traditional wedding garb from that country, a trip that costs families time and money.

Instead, they can shop for all their wedding needs from the comfort of their own homes. That's the enticing hook behind Exclusively. In Weddings, a new micro site from Exclusively. In, which bills itself as the largest, online, Indian apparel retailer in the U.S., targeting the three million-strong Indian American community here.

Launched last year, Exclusively. In is a "flash sale" or "private sale" site similar to Gilt Groupe. Private sale sites like Exclusively. In offer big discounts, usually for just 36 to 48 hours, on upscale merchandise in limited quantities. Exclusively. In offers up to 70% off high-end fashion from top Indian designers, as well as furnishings and travel experiences.

Unlike the rest of the site, the Exclusively. In Weddings micro site will operate as an online wedding boutique that offers most merchandise for 36 days, Kunal Merchant, director of marketing, told WalletPop. This longer buying period will help shoppers who may not want to snap up items immediately.

Because it's customary for South Asian couples and their families to travel to India on wedding shopping sprees, Exclusively. In Weddings' goal is to help families cut down on this huge expense -- one that helps make Indian weddings in the U.S. cost almost three times as much as other culture's U.S. weddings. Indeed, an average Indian wedding in the U.S. costs anywhere from $75,000 to $100,000 vs. approximately $26,000 for non-Indian weddings, Merchant says.

A flight to India alone can cost $1,000 per person; trips to that country to shop for the wedding often include not only the couple but family members as well, Merchant adds. And as India has become more affluent, consumer purchases have gotten more expensive, further jacking up costs. By contrast, prices on the site, Merchant says, are "extremely competitive."

In addition to travel costs, the price of outfitting the bride and groom and their wedding party can cost a small fortune. That's because Indian weddings are extravagant affairs that typically last several days, with multiple ceremonies and accompanying outfit changes that include intricately made saris that are often handcrafted and embellished with stones.

To outfit the bride and the bridal party, Exclusively. In Weddings features merchandise from upscale designers such as Ritu Kumar ("who is like the Vera Wang of India," says Merchant) in a mix of both traditional and modern garb, as well as American-influenced, fusion outfits.

On the site, saris and lenghas, often worn during the wedding ceremony and at the reception, range from about $400 to $2500. A recent visit to Exclusively. In Weddings turned up a Ritu Kumar bridal sale, including a maroon and orange paneled lengha set for $900 and a violet sari with a sequined blouse for $750.

Although Exclusively. In Weddings currently offers apparel, jewelry and outfits for brides, the bridal party and their families, the site plans to expand to include apparel for grooms. Also in the works: a free bridal consulting service that will be akin to a "luxury concierge experience," Merchant says.

While the site caters to Indian-born residents in the U.S. and second and third-generation Americans of Indian backgrounds, Merchant believes the site has the potential to attract a more diverse market. With Indian traditions and culture gaining more widespread appeal from such sources as the book and movie "Eat, Pray, Love" and stars like Katy Perry, who got married in India, more and more people are celebrating the culture, Merchant says. "It'll be interesting to see just who'll be shopping the site," he adds.

Ohio's shocking new attraction: 'Old Sparky'

By Laura Bly, USA TODAY

An electric chair and other macabre artifacts, including a Ku Klux Klan hood and robe from the 1920s and a wooden cage used in the late 1800s to restrain mental institution patients, will be on display next month as part of a new, R-rated exhibit at the Ohio Historical Center in Columbus.

Admission to "Controversy: Pieces You Don't Normally See," opening April 1, will be restricted to visitors 18 and older and children accompanied by adults.

The exhibit's most famous object is an electric chair that executed 315 inmates. Last used in 1963, it was once the highlight of paid tours of the old Ohio Penitentiary in Columbus. The prison sold postcards of the electric chair and souvenir pictures of the condemned men until it discontinued tours around 1931, notes the Columbus Dispatch. New visitors, the paper adds, "will not be allowed to sit in or touch the chair or other items in the collection."

"We think this exhibit will capture the public attention and public interest," executive director Burt Logan told the Dispatch. "History has a good side, which we often remember, and another side that we don't often see. We are not taking a stand of any type with this collection. These items represent part of the history of Ohio. It's purely an educational issue."

Ohio isn't the only place to use "Old Sparky" as a tourist draw.

The capital punishment exhibit at the Texas Prison Museum in Huntsville highlights its own decommissioned electric chair, and the gift shop sells such prisoner-made items as leather handcuff cases and correctional officer key chains. And Washington, D.C.'s National Museum of Crime & Punishment has an "electric chair helmet. " Made of leather, sponge, and wire mesh, the museum reports it "was essentially the weapon that Massachusetts state prison executioners used to end the lives of 65 men and women between the years 1901 and 1947."

So, readers, would the chance to see an electric chair jump start your vacation plans?

Greek debt restructuring: delay is the deadliest form of denial

The cause was that too much money was lent against assets that could not support that debt ? the asset in this case being the long-run growth potential of the Greek economy. The lending was a mistake, on the part of both lender and borrower, for loan "oft loses both itself and friend", as Polonius reminds us. The solution is to write off a large portion of the debt in return for bringing the government deficit to zero: the lenders will lose some of their money; the borrowers will suffer a recession.

At present, Greece does not pay the market rate on its debt, and does not have to go to market to finance its deficit ? it borrows the money from the other euro member states at a rate far below what the market would charge. Even at that rate, Greek debt explodes unless it can run a government surplus before interest payments of more than 10pc of GDP.

Greece faces the fiscal tightening with nothing to sugar that pill at all. Default or restructuring are officially ruled out, and Greece is part of the single currency (any suggestion of exit is even more emphatically denied). No democratic country either can or should take such bitter medicine. It would kill, not cure, consigning Greece to at least a decade of savage recession. The idea is pure fantasy.

The bail-outs are a palliative ? they address the symptoms but not the cause. But they are also a way of buying time for German and French banks, the primary source of the lending. Foreign banks lent too much to Greece and are sitting on a marked-to-market loss of around 50pc on those loans. But they are in the process of offloading that debt, mainly to the ECB. There is no virtue in excessive lending ? indeed, it was the cause of the financial crisis.

A Greek default would mean the shareholders in the lending banks would lose heavily, and the banks themselves would need to be recapitalised, largely by German and French taxpayers. Our estimates suggest a 70pc loss on their loans to Greece. In effect, that is a fiscal transfer from German and French to Greek taxpayers.

The more quickly they accept that, the better for everyone, and the likelier it becomes that the euro will emerge stronger ? not just a monetary union, but an Economic and Monetary Union, like it says on the tin. Further delay puts at risk both the loan and the friendship ? in the form of the currency union.

Greece could be forced to exit the euro, no matter how stout are current denials.

Club for teens has everything

The $11 million nightclub has everything -- the latest technology, a DJ every night, young stars who stop by for meet and greets, specialty drinks, a cafe.

Did I mention it is just for teens? In fact, if you are under 13 or over 18, they won't let you in -- and like any self-respecting club, you need to show proof of your age on your first visit, as well as pay the $25 cover charge.

Welcome to CRUSH, Atlantis' brand-new teen club in Nassau (www.atlantis.com). The place is huge -- 14,000 square feet with multi-touch computers and surface tables (want to send an e-post card to a friend? Post a photo on your Facebook wall? Check your e-mail? Order a snack on the table-sized tablet (pizza bagel, panini or smoothie)?

A 22-foot gaming "tree" with 56 game stations surrounded by 24 comfy chairs with surround sound. There are also 10 "cabanas" that eight teens can reserve for 30-minute intervals to play the latest games. There's a gaming concierge is on hand to offer tips.

"CRUSH had things to do for everyone," said 15-year-old Kim Cusmano, from Michigan. "They played really good music and the staff was really fun. I would have gone every night but it was too expensive."

"The kids had fun but it's too pricey to send three kids more than once or twice during your stay," added Kim's mom, Cheryl.

Still, on New Year's Eve some 300 teens partied here. As Atlantis gears up for Spring Break, executives believe they will have as many as 500 teens. (And since their entrance card is scanned when they come in and when they leave, parents can know exactly where their kids are.)

Like the latest megaships, gargantuan Atlantis on Paradise Island, just 180 miles from Florida, with nearly 3,500 rooms and 8,000 employees -- the largest employer in the Bahamas besides the government -- wants to be all things to all vacationers, including those not old enough to vote.

Yes, there are 40 restaurants and bars, including Bobby Flay's first foray outside the United States, and a casino and a standout spa. But there is also the largest teen club I've ever seen, a culinary center where kids take cooking lessons, an array of "Generation Y"spa treatments and even the Atlantis Speedway where kids and parents can design and build their own remote-control racecars.

Let's not forget the world's largest marine habitat (home to some 50,000 marine animals) and Dolphin Cay, which offers interactions with sea lions and dolphins (five calves were recently born) that even toddlers in diapers can take part in.

During the summer there are "fantasy camps" for kids that focus on everything from theater (learn from the Second City improve troupe) to Legos (with a Lego master builder on hand to teach) to Marine Adventures (go behind the scenes with the marine mammal team) and even the chance to get up close and personal with Miss Teen USA.

The huge (140-acre) Aquaventure with its mile-long river ride, seven-acre snorkeling lagoon (ideal for a child's first foray snorkeling), 13 pools, seven waterslides, including the Leap of Faith, a 60-foot plunge that ends in a clear acrylic tunnel in a shark-filled lagoon is such a big draw that cruise passengers spend $120 for adults and $80 for kids just for a day pass.

Young families love Splashers, a children's water play area and pool with its gentler slides, cargo nets, rope bridges for climbing and water cannons.

"I like it better than Disney World," says Shawn Cantrell, here from Kansas for the first time with his wife Betty and 8-year-old son. Ensconced in beach chairs near Splashers Betty adds, "You've got to have some cash."

That's the rub, of course. Despite deals through the spring and summer that include a fourth-night free starting at $499 per person, including two shallow-water dolphin interactions with kids 11 and under staying and eating free (as long as you book by March 31) you still will find yourself swiping your room card more than you'd like. The meal plans, like at Disney World, are a good bet, families say. "But don't count your pennies or you will ruin your time," says Josh Bateman, who had just finished playing in the water with the dolphins (at $139 per person) with his 6-year-old son Jack, who was beside himself with excitement at the experience.

Look for island-wide packages at www.nassauparadiseisland.com. A tip: A room at the newly renovated Comfort Suites Paradise Island (http://www.comfortsuitespi.com/), a five-minute walk away, can be had for less than you'd pay for a stay at Atlantis and at the Comfort Suites you get free access to all Atlantis has to offer, as well as free eats for the kids, free breakfasts and free Wi-Fi -- families here for the day on a cruise ship can book a room rather than pricey shore excursions or day passes.

On the other end of the spectrum, upscale families who prefer a more intimate experience can stay a mile away at the 105-room One & Only Ocean Club (www.oneandonlyresorts.com) where rooms start at $495 with a free kid's club and full access to Atlantis, including the teen club. (For a $50 fee, the Kids' Club staff will even entertain the kids at the water park.)

A year ago, Atlantis spent $6 million on an 8,000-square-foot facility called Atlantis Kids Adventures for kids 3 to 12 (those with special challenges are welcome), complete with LEGO room, mini grocery store and princess room where little girls can have tea parties with the stuffed animals that are lined up and waiting. Even the bathrooms are stand outs (think chandeliers in the little girls' stalls and superheroes for the boys.)

"Parents go on vacation looking for the wow factor for themselves and also for the kids," said Atlantis executive Amanda Felts. "We're taking playing to a whole new level."

Of course, it isn't cheap: Morning and evening sessions run $65 a child, but that includes a huge Mac Lab, the EVERY video game ever made room, theater and craft center. (Want to make jeweled flip-flops?)

Your junior foodies will love the Culinary Center with 21 seats and kid-sized utensils where professional chefs teach the kids. A group prepared Thanksgiving dinner for their parents. They will have the opportunity to make brunch for moms on Mother's Day and grill with dad on Father's Day.

"What's not to like," said Josh Bateman. "There is nothing you can't do here ... as long as you can pay for it!"

See you on the Lazy River.
