Business is still a force for good, public says

A survey of 2,000 people by ComRes for the BCC found that 82pc were positive about businesses provided they complied with the law, paid their taxes, and made a profit. However only 43pc said generating a profit should be a top priority.

Less than half were convinced that new or international companies would generate growth in the UK, and those surveyed were gloomy about the outlook.

Fourteen per cent believed the economy would improve over the next 12 months, while 67pc expected unemployment to rise.

Fifty-nine per cent agreed that the "UK is no longer a major trading nation, which the BCC described as worrying.

"In fact, the UK is the world's third-largest exporter of services and tenth-largest exporter of manufactured goods," it said.

The research was published as part of the BCC's 'business is good for Britain' campaign, aimed at promoting the private sector as the UK's "economic engine".

Commenting on the campaign, David Cameron, the Prime Minister, said success among UK businesses was "crucial for this country's future so I want this to be the year we really get behind them."
