The baboon in question was seen on Thursday by a woman who said it was sitting on her back porch in Jackson, no mention if it was sipping a lemonade.
That same day the baboon was spotted near Interstate 195 by a driver. There was no confirmation if the baboon had his thumb up or held an "Africa or bust" sign.
Authorities believe it could have fled from Jackson's Six Flags Great Adventure's Monkey Jungle, which contains (contained?) 150 baboons.
Six Flags spokesperson Kristin Siebeneicher told msnbc.com, "To our knowledge, none of our animals have left the premises, but it is not impossible."
In fact, it is highly probable that on another count of the animals they will find 149, as the chances of it having hitchhiked to Jersey from the Bronx Zoo or elsewhere are fairly slim.
Should you find yourself considering catching the baboon because it might make a good pet, think again, and take a bit of advice from the King Williams Town SPCA, "Baboons and monkey's do not make good pets."
We called Six Flags for comment, but they were undoubtedly busy fielding calls about the potential one of their primates flew the coop.
The Six Flags Monkey Island baboons are microchipped, but unfortunately to identify a chipped baboon, it has to be in possession. Maybe they should start including GPS tracking.
Maybe the baboon in question just wanted to enjoy the long 4th of July weekend with the rest of us, or was inspired by a sneak preview of the new Rise of the Planet of the Apes due out in August.
Hopefully the Baboon Apocalypse is not upon us all.
