Grains higher despite dollar's gains

Published: Dec. 13, 2011 at 6:08 PM

CHICAGO, Dec. 13 (UPI) -- Grains closed higher Tuesday despite a stronger dollar and an up-and-down day in equity markets that closed on a low note.

Corn was up 3/4 to up 3, soybeans were up 6 1/2 to up 7, wheat was up 6 1/4 to up 16 1/4 and oats were up 2 3/4 to up 6 1/2.

The dollar index, up 0.87 percent, put pressure on grain prices Tuesday, but higher oil prices provided enough support to push corn prices slightly higher. Wheat prices were mixed with front contract December delivery wheat climbing as Ukraine reported 22 percent of its winter wheat did not emerge and more than a third of the surviving crop was in poor shape. Dry weather in Argentina gave support to U.S. soybeans, as did an upturn in energy commodities.

The prices:

Corn: Dec 5.88 1/2 up 3, Mar 5.94 1/2 up 1/2, May 6.03 1/4 up 3/4, Jly 6.09 1/4 up 3/4.

Soybeans: Jan 11.18 1/2 up 6 1/2, Mar 11.29 up 6 3/4, May 11.39 3/4 up 7, Jly 11.50 up 7.

Wheat: Dec 5.91 3/4 up 16 1/4, Mar 6.00 1/2 up 6 1/4, May 6.20 1/4 up 6 1/4, Jly 6.33 1/4 up 6 1/4.

Oats: Dec 3.06 1/2 up 6 1/2, Mar 3.09 1/2 up 2 3/4, May 3.12 3/4 up 4 1/4, Jly 3.15 1/2 up 3 1/2.
