Putin party's poor show: likely to lose absolute majority
From Vinay Shukla Moscow, Dec 4 (PTI) Early returns indicated a poor performance by Russian strongman Vladimir Putin's ruling United Russia party, which though looks on course to win the parliamentary election but is likely to lose its three fourth majority. After the counting of 17 per cent of the votes, United Russia, which enjoyed absolute majority of 315 seats in the 450-strong Duma, so far has got 45.83 per cent of the votes, Chairman of the Central Election Commission Vladimir Churov announced. United Russia is followed by the Communist Party (KPRF) which was on the second spot with 20.73 per cent of the votes. Chair of the Supreme Council of United Russia, Speaker of the outgoing Boris Gryzlov claimed victory while speaking to media persons at the party headquarters and blamed the opposition parties for "scaring" the electorate resulting in the low turnout and modest results for his party. The ultra-nationalist LDPR of firebrand leader Vladimir Zhirinovsky was on the third place with 14.38 per cent votes. A Just Russia Party of disgraced former pro-Kremlin leader Sergei Mironov bagged 13.30 per cent votes. Earlier, exit poll results announced by the state-run Rossiya-24 TV indicated a poor performance for the ruling combine, predicting 48.50 per cent votes for the party, which is much less than the 64 per cent in 2007. The Communist Party (KPRF) was expected to bag 19.80 per cent of the votes, followed by the disgraced former pro-Kremlin leader Sergei Mironov's A Just Russia party with 12.80 per cent. The ultra-nationalist LDPR has got 11.42 per cent, VTsIOM pollster's exit polls show.
